September 25, 1983: I became briefly lost while returning down the side trail from Moxie Bald to the AT.

We are atop a mountain, looking out over a series of striated gray granite outcrops along the crest, partially covered by a forest of stunted dwarf spruce and fir sprinkled with a few hardwoods covered with bright golden autumn leaves. We are looking down at a huge valley dominated by a very large lake reflecting the very hazy very pale blue sky. In the misty distance beyond the lake a series of forested low mountain ranges cascade to the horizon.

I spent more than a half-hour crashing stubbornly around through the dense shrub growth before having the sense to return to the fire tower, which was visible from any point along the crest, and try again.
A whitewashed morning sky. Standing on the open crest of a mountain, looking up a series of gray rock terraces separated by boggy swaths covered with moss, leafy ground cover and stunted spruce and fir. Many of the leafy plants are turning gold or orange with the season. The terraces gradually ascend to a rounded peak a couple hundred feet above us.

It was past 10:30 when I regained the AT, and I still had almost eighteen miles of hiking before reaching Monson tonight. I needed to get moving.
A pale blue morning sky with a scattering of small white clouds. Standing in a fire tower atop a mountain, looking down across a boggy crest blanketed with moss, leafy ground cover and stunted spruce and fir. There are also extensive outcrops of naked gray rock. A long, narrow deep blue lake runs through a vast wooded valley hundreds of feet below. Across the valley a series of mountain ranges cascade to the horizon.

At the base of the mountain, I made a brief stop at Moxie Bald Lean-to in order to check out Bald Mountain Pond: an enormous lake similar to Moxie Pond and Pleasant Pond, but much more primitive in setting,
A deep soft blue morning sky with puffy white clouds. Standing on the open crest of a mountain, looking over treetops down a wooded mountainside into a vast wooded valley hundreds of feet below. Several ponds and large open fields break up the endless forest. Most of the forest is dark green evergreens, but scattered swaths of hardwoods sport gold, orange and red autumn foliage. Across the valley lines of hills and mountain ranges cascade to the horizon.

lacking improved gravel access roads and the summer cabins which dotted the shores of those two other beautiful lakes.

From the shelter, the Appalachian Trail followed an assortment of old woods roads and some gravel logging roads above the northwest shore of the pond and along Bald Mountain Stream for seven miles to Breakneck Ridge (a fitting name for a feature over which the AT in Maine passes).
We are standing on the shore of a very large lake beneath a light blue mostly sunny sky with a thicker line of clouds along the horizon. To our right are the trunks of two white birch trees that have grown together and become one at the bottom. The leaves of a bush growing near its base are rusty orange and past their peak autumn color. The country along and beyond the far shore is almost flat and covered with an evergreen forest. Center left, a single mountain range rises from the low country far away along the horizon.

The scenery past the pond was pretty, but unspectacular — definitely connecting trail. I reached Breakneck Ridge Lean-to at 2:45 and spent fifteen minutes reading the register and making my own entry.
