Provoking police into over-responding is a common tactic for radicals and police are happy to oblige. Both sides get what they want and the press is thrilled, too, but I didn't any positive results from it when I was involved in protests in the 60's, except that they did sell a lot of newspapers.

I was on the Ohio U newspaper just after Kent State, covering student groups pushing for change. Some actually fell apart because nonviolent members worried so much about agents provocateur causing confrontations that would derail their message. Then there were the undercover cops. Stay safe, kids.
