Mexico's actual Independence Day is on September 16th. Cinco de Mayo is the day that's only celebrated in one state, Puebla. That was when the Mexican Army defeated the French Army in the Battle of Puebla in May 5, 1862.

Since we already had our own war going on, that had little to do with the US but someone figured out how to convince people to spend $ "celebrating" it.

And changed the trajectory of the US Civil war as France diverted funds from the Confederacy to ward off a Mexican uprising. So Americans should thank and celebrate Mexicans on Cinco de Mayo.

That is true, though I had to look into this one to be honest. I'm glad I did though, because I didn't know how much of a historical impact this had in US History.
