Mexico's actual Independence Day is on September 16th. Cinco de Mayo is the day that's only celebrated in one state, Puebla. That was when the Mexican Army defeated the French Army in the Battle of Puebla in May 5, 1862.

Since we already had our own war going on, that had little to do with the US but someone figured out how to convince people to spend $ "celebrating" it.
