Meanwhile,
people are homeless,
supermarket deserts,
low-income health/dental clinics are scarce,
kids have no rec center,
libraries don't have enough room for books and community spaces,
adult education programs don't have meeting spaces,
there aren't enough park n rides for commuters, ...

Malls are now an anachronism. The mall in the next town over from me is slated to be demolished within this month.

Why can't we trade teardowns, which are environmentally wasteful, for things that help people?
(Assuming, of course, that the structures are structurally and otherwise safe.)

Our local mall is owned by some out of state firm and they regularly refuse to even respond let alone negotiate with the city about re-purposing it. More than ½ empty and they’re just waiting it out to say it’s no longer viable & tear it down. Presumably for high end SFHs no one can afford. 🤬🤬

Vulture capitalists, hedge funds, etc. Zero stake in the communities they blight.
