Seeing many GenXers commenting (esp on Threads) on the type of raising I also received as a late Boomer. Some of this being left to fend for ourselves was a holdover from previous generations. Some was because more moms were going to work and dads were refusing to step in and do more at home.

As this study found, "men did little between 1965 and 1975 to offset women's increased participation in the labor force." This was my experience. When my mom went back to school and then work in the 70s, my dad refused to do more.

My mother couldn't do it all, so we--all girls--were left to take care of ourselves, each other, and much housework and cooking. I was fascinated reading about the legacy of this and other history of American women in a forthcoming book I highly recommend:

Mom raised me and my brother. Dad was 'suppsed' to pay child support, but didn't more often than not. I never saw it until now that they wouldn't have forced him then.
