Us older people - born in the 1950s, were much less aware of pedophiles than your parents. I could ride my bike for hours, maybe 10 miles from home, by myself, and no one thought it unusual.

I'm solidly gen x and this stereotype has always confused me. I wasn't allowed out of my yard, much less to wander freely. Most of the people I went to school with weren't allowed much freedom either. Maybe it's a geographic/demographic thing?

Something must have happened regionally. I was born in the 60s, we ran loose in the neighborhood, but NO crossing the highway. I was supposed to avoid the highway coming home from school, because 'someone could grab you and be 50 miles away before we even knew you were late'.

My parents were born in the 30s and, if it were up to my dad I'm sure I could have done the same but my mother believed (and still believes) every urban legend, satanic panic, stranger danger story she ever heard. Now she's an avid fox news watcher- so it tracks
