🏄🏻‍♀️ In 1925, #DukeKahanamoku rescued 8 people from a fishing vessel that had capsized. Using his surfboard, he made repeated trips back and forth to get the survivors. The rescue led to #lifeguards across the US to begin using surfboards for water rescues. #Hawaii 🏊🏻‍♀️ 🛟

Sorry. I made an error in the Alt-Text. The woman standing on Duke’s shoulders is Doris Duke, an American heiress (not Doris Day, the actress).

😢 That’s so sad! I don’t know if real wood surfboards are made anymore. I think most modern boards are fiberglass.

Duke was also a carpenter and wood craftsman. He cut, carved and made his own surfboards.

You can buy balsa blanks but you have to shape them yourself. A guy I used to surf with at Topanga made reproductions of wooden boards for theme restaurants, but he died.
