I suspect it's that people aren't willing to reward Starbucks because of its hardcore anti-union stance. If they knew the workers were getting a fair shake, they'd be more inclined to shop there.

Or maybe it's more that a pandemic caused people to wise up to the fact that they can better make ends meet if they don't spend like they're made of money, & a prime example of such is buying $5 beverages 5× per week, which averages $1200 per year! Maybe they're realizing value in money discipline.

Along with fewer people going into the office, so it no longer results in a trip outside to the coffee shop 'water cooler'.
