My aunt co signed student loans for me for two years. After that, I just couldn’t bring myself to ask her to do it again. I was unable to deal with the stress of it all.

I was lucky. I was able to work for minimum wage and support myself and pay my college fees at a state-sponsored school. Basic healthcare was provided on campus. Who can do that now?
Oh, and housewife or not, I've always had to work. My brother went eight years (paid for) and then quit.

In response to Nana of the Shire.
I graduated in January of 1965, one semester longer than four years, but with zero debt. I took courses in the summer to make up for only being able to take 12 units per semester.
Irony, of our 3 kids, the girl is the one with a PhD. She's a professor now.
