Is anybody here a car mechanic?

I’m in the process of having to rebuild the top end of a Mini Cooper for my daughter, and my wife says I should just take it someplace.

I’m replacing the water pump, thermostat housing, oil filter housing gasket, timing chain, etc.

What would that cost? $4k?

Not a mechanic. I can wrench a bit. And have paid a bunch of money to mechanics lately.

If you have the parts and are competent, do it.

4k wouldn’t shock me at all. And a few weeks wait for parts. Or longer.

I’m mechanically inclined, and have done some work on cars in my youth… but man, my body doesn’t work that way anymore!

I have spent around $500 for parts and tools, with another $100 or so to go. Then it’ll be around $500 to get the head machined.

My wife doesn’t believe my cost estimate.

Are we talking a real Mini Cooper here or the current BMW version? It’s an original British Mini Cooper I would probably do the work myself if I had the tools and the Haynes manual, if it’s the BMW thing I would just take it to the nearest dealership and bite the bullet.
