For years I performed lockdown drills in my classroom, stationing myself between the door & my kids, thinking about how I would keep them safe If. The kids played at rolling their eyes & being snarky (this was 10 yrs ago), but I will never forget the terror in their eyes when my lock failed one day.

This is a heartbreaking read. Kids and gen Z are carrying more trauma than we can possibly understand. I don't think cowering under desks as a kid in fear of Russian nukes compares to this constant fear of mass horror, allowed by all for the obscene preservation of the 2A.💔

The VP in "charge" of safety drills said I must not have locked my door properly. I knew I had, because I did it for years. I kept asking her to address it, to the point when she claimed I was shouting at her in emails and being unprofessional. I had to call in my union rep.

When my lock failed again in the next safety drill, one of the security guards called in a favor downtown to come fix the lock on my door.

It had been installed upside down. We were never safe in that room.

I was almost written up for advocating for the safety of my students.
