We saw several of these #butterfly swarms on the sandy banks of the Middle Fork of the Salmon in Idaho when we rafted there last June. Not sure what attracted them to the sand - some trace mineral? - but they were beautiful.

Yes, it is minerals in the sand. You can make a ‘puddler’ for your garden with a shallow container, damp beach sand and some stones for them to land on. Don’t use sterile bagged play sand
