In the US, what used to be “welfare” is called actually TANF, & in order to receive it you have to work full time at a job or finding employment. Most other programs folks lump into “welfare” have workfare requirements. The majority of folks on Medicaid & SNAP work as well.

Most of the people on welfare are unemployed

Accuracy Alert!

The claim that 'Most of the people on welfare are unemployed' is not fully supported by the available data. Evidence shows that while there has been an increase in weekly jobless claims and unemployment benefits applications reaching the highest level in months (Reuters, CNN, AP News), the unemployment rate remains relatively low at 3.9% (CNN). Moreover, the number of long-term unemployed individuals constitutes only 19.6% of the total unemployed (BLS). This suggests that although there is a notable portion of people receiving unemployment benefits, many people on welfare might also include the underemployed, those temporarily out of work, and individuals with low-income jobs. Therefore, it is inaccurate to conclude that most people on welfare are unemployed without considering the broader context of welfare recipients' employment status.
