What’s the role of social media? Is an echo chamber a problem? Or desirable?

Online conversation rarely convinces anyone. So what’s the point? Like-mindeds can use SM to organize, refine messaging, etc. So there’s value there.

Not sure. What are your thoughts?

My thinking: Depends on the user.

Agreed: Social media isn't a viable medium for discussion and debate, were someone to want that. I don't think they do, most of the time. (Or they're misguided.)

For me and for most of us, social media is a place to find and connect with like-minded people.

In which case, it would make sense that the SM ecosystem is eventually made up of a number of platforms where like-minded people gravitate. “One big platform to rule them all” is possible but probably not ideal. It would likely lead to lots of worthless arguments.

Not sure I 100% agree there. As people follow like-minded people, predominantly, they therefore predominantly see the content from like-minded people. Even on the large/major platforms.

As you said, the echo chambers prevent most of the differing opinions to cross-pollinate.
