#PaintalongaBen Took the weekend off & came back with a bang to finish this yesterday. Skin tones brought it together, then I went over the upholstery, clothing & sky to colour correct & intensify with some glazes. Happy with the result. Hope it gets the #ArtSpout seal of approval!

Love this. I know she sat with you for a while, but did you also get a photo of her to work with? I don't think I could remember details like her shirt without a photo.

Oh blimey yes. I use the sittings to get a feel for the sitter & work up some trial sketches. Make my mistakes & get to know their faces there so I’m familiar when I come to the actual painting. I took a ton of photos & this is the one I went with. I have at least a couple of others I want to use.

Ah, that makes me feel better that I work from photos. I have no idea how old timey artists did what they did, with royal portraits and such!

They’ve had their tricks for centuries. Don’t forget Van Eyck was a pioneer with the use of the camera obscura- which is practically cheating as far as I’m concerned!

Ok, so here's where I stand on that. I think every artist uses every tool available to them. So I use Photoshop, and I also use a projector if I'm doing large things. And I do mostly large things. I can sketch, but do I really want to spend a whole day sketching a large thing?
