I studied this phenomenon in my psychology classes. It seems that marrying fast or early leaves little space to create an "exit strategy" while those that wait years are sometimes doing exactly that. Hubs & I knew within 6 weeks, married at 1 yr. That was 1993. Still going strong!

As my grandparents told it, they met at a church lunch when Grandma's date left without buying lunch for her or her kids. Grandpa bought them lunch. They went for a walk, fought about politics, went home and fucked, and that was it: together til death 50+ years later.

There're pastors who get married to prophetesses after they both pray for revelation from God and get divorced after a few months. Not everyone is cut out for marriage, especially those with ego issues.

We dated for 6 months, then moved in together. Same-sex marriage became legal in South Africa a few years later, but only after 8 years together did we get married. "Shall we get married?" I asked her one day. "Ok", she said 😂23 years together in total, still happy.

I didn't even date the man I married and left my country for 29 years ago. We had a nice friendship for a few months and then suddenly we were married and on the move. From my POV, everyone you marry is a stranger even if you lived with that person for a decade before marriage. It's different.
