Full disclosure: I grew up AME and was an altar boy in my uncle's church in Denver for a time. But he hated that I used to fall asleep each week during his sermons in front of the congregation. (I was really only there for the music).

The first Black denomination was the AME (African Methodist Episcopalian), created by Richard Allen. Richard led a walkout of Black parishioners in Philadelphia ("City of Brotherly Love") in 1787 when they left their church due to frustration over forced segregation.
