“Get woke, go broke,” has become a rallying cry of the political right ... a meme that allows MAGA country to believe that there is ongoing, massive backlash to products that acknowledge and celebrate marginalized communities. But the supposed boycotts never seem to be reflected in the bottom line.

My understanding is that boycotts’ power is more in shaming a company to change their policies rather than influencing them through a significant loss of revenue. And this is why boycotts are usually ineffective. If someone has real knowledge in this area, I’m interested in learning more.

I wrote a piece a few years back listing so testosterone-heavy Caucasian-filled films that bombed big time and labeled them "Don’t Get Woke, Go Broke." Toxic fandom squealed like pigs over it.
