An elected official should only be allowed to change parties when they file campaign paperwork declaring for a race. The US is rapidly becoming lawless and voting doesn't seem to hold people accountable anymore--see exhibit A.

I'm all for a bill where if you want to switch parties at any time you forfeit your seat and there is a special election for it. If your constituents still want you you'll get re-elected.
