Sitting down to read some of Richard Carlile's writings from 1819 and 1820. I cringe at the title of his publication.... The term "Republican" is hard to not project my modern distain for onto.

Just keep in mind that this was before the Civil War, and the ideologies behind the terms "republican" and "democrat" were essentially the reverse of what they are today.
