The brilliant linguistic scholar Julia Penelope called this grammatical technique “agent deletion,” in her groundbreaking book ‘Speaking Freely: Unlearning the Lies of the Fathers’ Tongues’ (1990, Pergamon Press). Here, agent deletion deftly disappears the perpetrator but not his violence.

Passive voice facilitates agent deletion. “She was raped” makes the perp invisible.
