I'd never experienced the kind of pain that I did when my younger brother died unexpectedly, four years ago.

Writing has always been cathartic for me, so I wrote this piece shortly after he died.

Remembering Lee today, on his birthday.

I’m so sorry for your loss. One of my brothers died in 2019 before the pandemic. It was sudden. He died in his sleep at 55. It was in Florida. Even though he hadn’t been sick they didn’t require an autopsy. I’ll never understand why. I’m sad I didn’t get to say goodbye. ☮️💙❤️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🙋‍♀️

I'm sorry for Lee's passing from your life. I relate so much to the regret you feel when frustration led to harder edged words. Your heart carries him lovingly; that's obvious. Happy Birthday Lee.

For anyone who had gone through similar, this is so understandable. And, that’s the thing, you reacted at the time as is natural for someone who cares. I hope you can come to forgive yourself. May good memories of your brother bring you comfort.

Happy heavenly birthday, Lee.
Your love is real in these words. I'm sure he understood the care you had for him. I wonder if counselling is a good option for you. It may be time to lighten this load.

This was heartbreaking to read, I can’t even imagine the lived pain. Please remember also to show kindness to yourself.

This was beautiful and heartfelt. I lost my twin sister many years ago to breast cancer and I too still sob as if she just died.

Thank you for sharing this, I know the struggle of loving someone who is self destructive (my beloved middle child) wanting to make his life easier, better, safer. The push/pull of trying to help and being pushed away.

Oh, I don't know if I can read this. My own younger brother died January 5, 2020. His birthday is next Sunday, April 30. He would have been 62.

As a retired Bereavement Counselor, I can attest to the importance of journaling when something catastrophic happens in your life. Emotions run deep. But so rewarding. I sometimes told loved ones to write letters to the dead. Then destroy the letter. It was only for their eyes.
