We are covering the 1970s in my classes next week. What's one thing my students should learn about that decade?

Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) formed; 1976 bicentennial celebrated 1776; clothing styles included bell bottoms, halter tops, smocked tops; rock & roll bands were awesome.

Nixon. And then look at how almost everything we are going through today -- including Earth Day! -- ties back to the disaster that was Richard Milhous Nixon.

Stayin Alive plays in my head as I slide on down the street.
I will have to post a cover of this soon. I almost did it recently but I chose "I will survive" instead (pinned). This song is so desperate when you examine the lyrics. "life's going nowhere... some body help me
somebody help me yeah"

When I started teaching in 1970 the dress code for teachers still required skirts or dresses for women. And the oldest staff were normal school graduates. Only youngsters had BA's, no MA's or beyond. But youthful activism helped end Vietnam and got a corrupt president to resign.

Movies often had actors that looked like actual human beings, and cinema overall was bat-splat, giddily MAD. But also could look and feel intimately real.

Women were finally admitted to Brown University in 1971, and Dartmouth in 1972.

Columbia University did not admit women in the 70’s, and finally did in 1983.

In September of 1970, 90 women broke a 94 year tradition and were admitted to Johns Hopkins University.

Unbelievable comes to mind.

One thing?
Impossible!
• Checks and balances worked then and real journalists did their jobs: A crooked president was convinced to resign.
• Like Gen Z now, young people took to the streets & helped to end the Draft & Vietnam War. (began in ‘60s)
• Title IX Sports
• FOIA
• Abortion rights enacted

It was that period of bliss between the turbulent 60s and the uptight 80s. Best decade for hair, music, and fashion. ✌🏽

The rise of unions and the middle class. I've run into so many people younger than me who disparaged unions, but they didn't have the option of joining one. With the rise in interest recently, it might be good for them to know the history.
