Monarch caterpillar update! They've abandoned the milkweed and found a Pothos to pupate on 🙏🦋

This is so cool! I’ve tried twice to get milkweed going at my house in central TX, and I’ve failed both times. I never knew they’d do their cocoon thing on a pothos! But I guess they needed the milkweed to eat first?

Yep! Milkweed is the only host plant the mom lays eggs on the the caterpillars eat. They will pupate anywhere pretty much and tend to leave the milkweed to do so.

Maybe you were trying a tropical or non-native milkweed. There are many native varieties that will not only grow better for you, but offer specifics Monarchs need along their migration depending on where they are - https://www.wildflower.org...

Found this guy several weeks ago and then he disappeared! No sign of a cocoon. 🤷

Hopefully it's flying around somewhere nearby! Their chrysalises are so pretty but hard to spot sometimes 🙏
