So #jerryspringer has died. He was the father of trash tv. His show celebrated lack of education, blurred facts, and gave voice to poor behavior. In turn it broke the social contract.

This may not be fair… but I can almost draw a direct line between #TheJerrySpringerShow and the rise of MAGA

Morton Downey Jr. did it first. It's just he's been dead longer.

I personally know someone who was a guest on that show. The entire bit they did was fabricated. All complete horsepucky.

I would not call him the father, that goes to Morton Downey Jr, who was on the air 4 years before Springer. MDJ pioneer and perfected the audience driven trash talk show. We should not forget that the biggest peddler of trash TV in the 80s was King World Entertainment.

Yeah. They were in the same fraternity to be sure, But Springer’s audience far surpassed Downey’s. Neither was an asset to our national dialogue.

I was in Southern California for the rise and fall ( more like a yawn) of Wally George. The right wing knucklehead who filled his audience with boys who seemed to have some sort of hormonal rage going on.

If we keep tracing, I’m sure Beverly Hills Hillbillies would be in that lineage.

I saw the announcement and felt the same thing. I am saddened for his family.
Though his impact on society was an un-healable wound. The constant display of tacky trash behaviour gave tacit authority to be as publicly ignorant as possible.
I think it began with Lifestyle’s of the Rich & Famous show

I would argue that Rush Limbaugh was the catalyst for everything you just mentioned. Springer never took himself seriously and he did push back on his most deplorable guests. Limbaugh was just plain evil.
