While on business last week, I found myself explaining Black gospel's influence on Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" to a White friend who is otherwise very knowledgeable about music. But I had to school him on this one.

When this occurs healthily, there is an acknowledgment of some kind by the borrower. And if the new music retains some of the spirit and authenticity of the tradition it came from, it can become respected and even cherished by the people that inspired it. When it happens the opposite way, it is appropriation. A prime example of the former would be Paul Simon’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” which imitates the style of Black gospel composers, in particular the work of Thomas A. Dorsey, to create a secular hymn. Since its release in 1970, many Black churches and gospel musicians have adapted “Bridge Over Troubled Water” back into the church with various covers—the most famous being Aretha Franklin’s version.
