My autistic son likes to go walking. A police officer stopped the other day & asked if he was alright. My son handled it well, assuring him he was fine & not lost. I have mixed feelings about this non-incident, glad it was no big deal but uncomfortable with the reminder he looks different.

It is easy to imagine that encounter going an entirely different way. The officer could have suspected he was high or something & things can spiral out of control. That happened to my autistic nephew who was agitated & walking home at night after a flat tire.

Yeah. I think that is why hearing about it unnerved me so much. He was pretty casual telling me about it, and in my head I just though... oh, yikes. It doesn't help my other son is also autistic and somewhat more likely to get upset when strangers talk to him.

As a mother & grandmother I am so happy that it turned out in a non-tragic way. You were right to recognize the danger.
