My new & hardwon skill at changing smoke detector batteries has failed me, as another started beeping, I changed the battery, it kept beeping, & now I can't get the battery door open. The detector itself is over 20 yrs old, so that might be part of the problem, alas.

Call your local fire department and they’ll change your batteries and get you all fixed up at no cost to you

They don't last forever, unfortunately. If you buy a new one with a 10 year battery, check the battery date. Bought one that died within a few months, an fire inspector checked the date and said it had been in a warehouse for a decade. Who knew?
