Rewatched The Black Cauldron, and God it's a mess. 80's Disney tried so hard to make a Bakshi movie without Bakshi (they asked; he said no), and just couldn't escape their own executive meddling.

Some gorgeous sequences but no tonal consistency or unified vision.

The weirdest thing to me is how the exact recipe that caused this to fall apart - ambitious, well-meaning attempt to expand into a new style and genre undermined by executives afraid it would bomb and guaranteeing that fate - became a template they'd repeat for Atlantis and Treasure Planet.

Watching the movie, you can see them struggling between conflicting desires to do something different and reinforce the brand. And of course the end result accomplishes neither.
