Everyone talks about "Americana" music. Its a category. Bands market off it.
Well what the hell is it? What makes it different from RnR with a country twinge (which Sun was recording at the very beginning)?
Is Dylan's John Wesley Harding an example (listening now)?
Others?

In response to Ridge Cook.
It's the instrumentation. With a double bass, banjo, and mandolin, they look like a bluegrass band, but they're not that good, so they play RnR.

Ha! that's pretty good.
Hold over from 80s-90s tendency to treat other musical forms "ironically". Slide from one type to another. Go hard rockin' one song, then a country song (which has no connection to their lives) the next.
REM playing one of their hits, then a 60s Sugar Pop song during encore
