I saw movie critic Christie Lemire get death threats once, for having the nerve to say that she didn't like a certain movie.
If I want to say a certain Marvel or DC movie, or Star Wars movie is bad, I want a layer of protection, which is what my username and a paper bag over my head affords me.

Since I live in Tennessee too I know exactly what you’re saying about safety issues in using your name. You do whatever is best for you. On the bird I did not use my name or photo but decided to do it here. To each their own ❤️

If people have to use their real names, honest expression of ideas and opinions will be diminished because we all have lives outside of social media that are affected in one way or the other. Ask me how many hours of meetings I had to attend at work about what would get us fired on social media.

Thank you for this! I’ve used this username since I first joined Twitter and Tumblr back in 2007. It’s also been my email since gmail first started. It adds a certain level of safety some of us need, and I’m not about to change it now.

As an educator, I want to be able to be free with my opinions here. If parents/school district members saw they may take issue with them and I just would like to avoid that. Separation of personal/work lives.

On that other platform, I knew a whole lot of folks who used real names (assuming that those folks were being forthright and honest) but never engaged in convos or anything other than retweet. A lack of original statements or routine engagement is way more wierd and sets off much more flags⚠️🤔

Michael McFaul, of all people, tweeted this a couple of weeks ago saying if we didn't use our real names we were bots. I not only unfollowed him but I blocked him. I will do that to anybody else and save them the stress of having to look at my nickname on a Spout.
