Sharing photos from a recent hike in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park.

This wasn’t our first run in with a red diamondback rattlesnake and it won’t be our last. They’ve been spotted frequently of late.

We weren’t as close as it looks. It gave us a good warning and we gave it plenty of room.

A Tarantula Hawk (a wasp that lays it’s eggs in living but paralyzed tarantulas). Usually they are in flight. It’s rare to see one on the ground and be able to observe for any length of time. This one was in the process of either burying a tarantula or preparing a burrow for one prior to a hunt.

As with most things, the vast, vast majority of people who get bit, in Texas at least, have done something they shouldn't have, put their hands or feet somewhere they couldn't see, etc. A great desert raised dog helps a lot:)

Yes, exactly. They don't want to deal with you anymore than you want to deal with them, and they will leave you alone as long as you do the same and don't get too close or startle them.

I've never encountered a rattlesnake or a cottonmouth, and I hope I never will. My parents live in Florida, and some tiny scorpions were in my daughter's room when we visited last year. She freaked out. So did I. My mother just scooped it up and crushed it.

Yikes, scorpions are not nice. We apparently have them here in SoCal but I haven’t seen any personally yet. When I lived in Texas as a kid, we saw plenty of them.
