Sharing photos from a recent hike in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park.

This wasn’t our first run in with a red diamondback rattlesnake and it won’t be our last. They’ve been spotted frequently of late.

We weren’t as close as it looks. It gave us a good warning and we gave it plenty of room.

A Tarantula Hawk (a wasp that lays it’s eggs in living but paralyzed tarantulas). Usually they are in flight. It’s rare to see one on the ground and be able to observe for any length of time. This one was in the process of either burying a tarantula or preparing a burrow for one prior to a hunt.

I’m so sorry, I can’t tell which plant you’re asking about. One of the bugs with threads is that it’s almost impossible to tell which part of the thread a comment is for. I hope Spoutible can get that worked out.

I believe you’re asking about the caterpillar scorpionweed? It’s a CA native plant, a flowering shrub that can grow up to 2 feet high.
