With...Biden prepared to sign a debt-ceiling bill loaded with Republican spending cuts, Speaker Kevin McCarthy proved he could use the threat of default to squeeze concessions out of a Democratic president − even though his party controls just one legislative chamber, and by a slim majority at that.

Should have invoked the 14th amendment. It couldn't be more clear about the country not defaulting on its debt
But no, we had to negotiate with the hostage takers because... Well because. Don't get mad when you get what you ask for

A precedent of bipartisan collaboration and democracy-in-action, you mean?

Dude, where have you been for the last 247 years?

Debt ceiling has only been around since 1917. It's NEVER been something that was used as a hostage by either party, has ALWAYS been approved in a bi partisan manner, and has never had to be negotiated.

This is the first time, and after months of Biden saying he wouldn't negotiate on this, he did

The precedent already exists, so by definition cannot be set by Biden. If we ever get the opportunity to do away with the ridiculous debt limit it must be taken. If the gop continues its drift to the right eventually we might get a speaker crazy enough to not negotiate at all.

Unfortunately Biden has set a precedent that now if one chamber who only has control by a super slim majority (and is Republican) can do this same thing every time the debt ceiling is up. And the deal isn't great. Negotiating has never been done before and now this has changed everything.
