With...Biden prepared to sign a debt-ceiling bill loaded with Republican spending cuts, Speaker Kevin McCarthy proved he could use the threat of default to squeeze concessions out of a Democratic president − even though his party controls just one legislative chamber, and by a slim majority at that.

Unfortunately Biden has set a precedent that now if one chamber who only has control by a super slim majority (and is Republican) can do this same thing every time the debt ceiling is up. And the deal isn't great. Negotiating has never been done before and now this has changed everything.

This is probably my biggest issue with the deal, BUT, it can be mitigated if the debt ceiling is eliminated. We have two years. Democrats should be pressured to run on abolishing the debt ceiling in 2024, and if that doesn't work someone should challenge its constitutionality via the 14th Amendment.

I think there is already a lawsuit filed that challenges it's constitutionality re separation of powers. The budget is already approved, so that when the debt ceiling is reached it actually takes precedence over the approved budget? Also, US debts cannot be questioned.

This is excellent news. This has to be right up there with filibuster and court reform, gun control, and voting rights. Take the hostage away. Don't let them do this again.
