Norfolk Southern, the company whose train derailed in Ohio and unleashed chemicals, made a record $12 billion in revenue last year.

Instead of investing in better safety measures, what did the company do? It authorized a $10 billion stock buyback.

Corporate greed, folks.

Not too many years ago freight train crews consisted of five people. Engineer, fireman, two brakeman and a conductor. Fireman was an old hold out and they rode on the first engine. They removed the brakeman and fireman leaving two people. Now they want to do away with the conductor leaving 1 person

In their defense, they're doing a much better job. Unless of course you count the rail cars that ended up in a PA river this past Saturday.

I’m not convinced the ECP braking measures would’ve prevented this awful tragedy.

Guess they have enough money to invest into the Brownfiekd-like clean up they are responsible for!! Seems like they have double the work in Ihio since they did not clean up the damage from the previous derailment there. #EPA is urging water authories near and far to monitor closely.

Glad you're here, @rbreich ! We need your voice on all platforms! This truly is disgusting. This is the amazing #FreeMarket #Capitalism that #Republicans vote themselves into poverty and early graves to protect? It's like a bad movie.

Their $25K tax deductible donation to the town via red cross for the clean-up efforts is a huge slap in the face for the town and it's 5K residents.
The entire clean-up effort is and should be their responsibility financially and otherwise.

I think I read somewhere that stock buybacks used to be illegal.

Is that true?

Yes, they were illegal until 1982. Reagan changed the rule. Much of the rise of the billionaires and increase in income inequality can be directly attributed to Reagan's "trickle down" theory of economics and accompanying policies.

Norfolk Southern owns this bridge just outside of Pittsburgh. It's been shut down indefinitely. Has been in need of repair for decades. Now it is at crisis stage. https://www.cbsnews.com/pi...

Yep, criminal conduct by corporations. Stock buybacks are just terrible. Also seems to me to be a conflict of interest for Sr mgmt and BOD all of whom personally benefit from the price increases in their holdings as a result of the buy back.

It's corporate greed, and it's reinforced by the established compensation and reward models and mechanisms that are deliberately short-term-oriented. Corporate managers lack the motivation to think long-term and focus on business sustainability, because it is outside the scope of their bonus models.

And they had the nerve to "donate" $25k. The absolute gall of some people.
But don't worry, Major Pete stated that they won't legally enforce changes to the brakes so guess those companies will do it out of the goodness of their hearts.

Class one railroads laid off their "car knockers" - these guys used to inspect each train before it left the yard, and would hit bearings and wheels with a hammer to detect cracked metal that would change the sound. This wreck was caused by wheels or bearings.

That this story isn’t bigger news is appalling. They owe a duty to the communities they go through that they are willfully failing.
