"Though it did not explicitly say so, the Second Amendment was motivated in large part by a need for the new federal government to assure white people in the South that they would be able to defend themselves against Black people."

In response to Ericlo.
While suppressing black people wasn't the reason the Second Amendment was adopted by the majority, the situation of the State being able to suppress a slave insurrection WAS mentioned in the debates over the Bill of Rights as a pro-2A point.

"The scholar Carl T. Bogus writes in a law review article, "The Hidden History of the Second Amendment":
As a Virginian, Madison knew that the militia's prime function in his state, and throughout the South, was slave control."

And I'm not saying the militia wasn't used for that purpose, or that it didn't come up in the debates (it did) but a large part of the debate on this was standing army v a military force that lived and worked alongside other civilians.

The majority reason for the militia support in the Consitution was to prevent a federal standing army from oppressing the people, they were trying to create a government for the people by the people so a militia vs a standing army provided a moral check against using the militia against the people.

These sentiments toward the militia existed even among the Frames who thought that slavery was repugnant and detested.

Anyway, yes those who were for slavery were also for the militia for the purpose of maintaining slavery, but the issue is more complicated than it being the primary purpose.
