With the #Indiana #gas #Tax going up next month, it seems like an appropriate time to post an updated graph of how gasoline taxes in Indiana have changed over time. In July 2023, #Hoosiers will pay $0.729/gal or 40% more than the the $0.522/gal they paid in July 2015.

#Indiana is one of a handful of states which imposes TWO taxes on #gasoline :
- The first is a fixed state tax (which rose to $0.340/gal in July).
- The second is a percentage use tax equal to 7% of the average price of gas in the sate (which will rise to $0.205 in July).

The rising #Tax on #gasoline in #Indiana over recent decades has been entirely due to state policy. 75% of the tax you pay at the pump now goes to the state. The Federal tax on gasoline hasn't risen since 1993.

Per the EIA, as of July 2022 (latest available), #Indiana had the THIRD HIGHEST total #gasoline #taxes of all US states. We're only a nose behind Illinois and California, while #Kentucky is 31st with 46% less tax/gallon than Indiana.

I don't think it's a bad thing, but I do think it's hypocritical to tout Indiana as a low-tax state when that's not the case for many things. Gas taxes are some of the highest in the nation and property taxes are comparable to many areas in Illinois now.
In response to Ronald Alexander.
