Spent a lot time today feeling gutted and despondent about the SFFA ruling, though KBJ’s 🔥 dissent helped.

But I also turned back to this amazing book. The chapter I am reading is called “We Had to Pick Ourselves Up” and it is about the aftermath of the immediate end of slavery.

Specifically, it’s about how the newly freed enslaved Black populations leaned into each other to build lives from nothing—turned out from plantations *maybe* with only the clothes on their backs.

But we have always picked ourselves up. And now we still have (for now) the educational institutions that we made the last time we had to do that. We still have communities and each other. And we have a different history today: what we have already accomplished.

It is too late to shove the lid on. The wings have dried and unfurled. What we bring to the table — if only a fraction of it, is sitting there in the open. We don’t need to grovel for rights that were always ours. We know who we are, we have picked ourselves up, and we are marching on.
