Nellie Pennington

On this day in 1958, following a 13-day engagement, my parents married. They made it nearly 50 years, until my father's death in 2008. They raised 5 kids, moving every few years during his military years, then settled in Maine and founded the Maine Antique Digest.

Me: "The emergency vet didn't charge my husband for the visit but said she'd never seen anything like the bumps on the pup's hind paws in her 14 years as a vet."

Our vet: (confidently) "Well, we'll see if it's something I've seen in my *42* years!"

16 years ago today, after a night of snowstorms and lightning, we #lost my dad. An Air Force navigator, photographer, fly-fisher, and father of five, he and my mom founded and published the Maine Antique Digest. We had an old Ford station wagon with the "way back" seats, too. We drove from Shreveport, LA to NJ to fly to my dad's new posting in Labrador in 1971.

While we were in Labrador, we had a Volkswagen Beetle and my folks would pile all 5 of us kids in, with the two littlest ones in the "way back"!

The best was riding in the way back with our black lab. I don't think the regular back had seat belts either and while my sister who was born in 83 had a car seat, my older brothers and I born in the early 70s never used one. Of course this was also when we had 4/55 AC - 4 windows down at 55mph.
