In the height of my #caregiverburnout , I completely lost who I was beyond the roles of #caregiver , working professional and mom. Even worse I let who I was in those roles define me. This is what #Burnout does.

Feeling like I’m winning against the #caregiverburnout and then days like the last few hit, when I actually have time but can’t seem to feel satisfied, can’t think what to do for myself and revert to putting all mental energy on to-do lists. I’m so tired of this headspace. #caringthrucancer

I admit it. One of the first thoughts that came to mind when I assumed the mantle of #cancercaregiver for my husband was, “I got this, I got you…. But who is going to take care of me?”

Hubs has been is the hospital for a week & probably has a few more days to go. It has been a personally harrowing week for us. He had a mass that was successfully removed but me being damn near blind, handling 2 dogs, normal house chores and a possible cancer diagnosis got me twistin'. Him, too.😞

May is brain tumor/cancer awareness month. Get you and your kids eyes checked. Its about so much more than just vision. My sons tumor, and countless others like him, was caught through a routine eye exam.

It's #melanomamonday . You can read my 1st person account of my #Melanoma story here.
More cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in a day than all other cancers combined. Oral squamous cell killed my brother. 2 lesions, same size. I lived, Mikey didn't.

We thought we knew what to expect, what a spot on an MRI meant and how to handle it. We’d been through it, spoke the language, had been on the inside.
That’s when we learned another hard truth about a #cancer journey: you never fucking know.

I honestly don't think this is discussed enough. It's a real phenomena, and can cause significant mental health setbacks, and other health issues.

As a #cancercaregiver I struggled with whether or not what I was doing was “heroic” in the face of my husband’s literal life and death struggle. What I realized is that it’s less about the hero-dubbing and more about who’s doing it.

Caregivers: You are TOTALLY the heroes - Caring Through Cancer
Caregivers often dismiss the heroism of the work they do. Saying we're heroes ourselves comes with too many doubts. But it's less about whether or not we're heroes and more about who's saying it. The patients telling the caregivers we're heroes? Now that means something.

For anyone out there who are caregivers, to elderly parents, family with disabilities, or for any other loved one, it is hard, I see you, we are doing our best! I am learning daily that I can’t do it all and that is okay - gotta use my resources, ask for help, & get my own mental health support!

If you always worry about what everyone else is doing, you will eventually forget about yourself. Never lose sight of the fact that self care is of the utmost importance. It's okay to say no, to not be the one that everyone comes to, to put yourself first when needed.

As a cancer patient who cared for myself, and as a caregiver for a parent (Lewy Body dementia) I cannot emphasize how perfect this article is. Friends/family might want to help but they just don't know how. This is a must-read for everyone.
