2 Take a Stand bags done, and all the many parts for Running With Scissors all prepped. Freezing overnight temps start tomorrow pm, so the rest of the garden & hibiscus get harvested tomorrow - sewing takes a pause for food prep!

Hubs’ chemo bills have skyrocketed since he got dropped from Medicaid, and even with all we’ve done to be self reliant, I haven’t found a way through yet. I doubt I will.

At the #Farmlet today- Hibiscus is finally blooming (harvesting 1-2 oz of calyxes per day) and for the first time we got 4 eggs (we have 5 hens and 1 rooster.)
Still bringing in tomatoes and peppers, the fall crops of betts, peas & Lima beans are looking good and leeks are ready to harvest!

The great hibiscus experiment: $7.49 for 30 seeds, a summer of fretting waiting for blooms, and we’re finally getting them! I’ll be harvesting the calyxes for herbal tea.

I’m calling this project done until spring! 2 pallets of antique brick and 5 cubic yards of wood chips all by hand. It’s a joy to walk the garden now, so totally worth it❤️

We’ve made good progress on the garden paths, using up a good portion of the brick pile and using up all the boxes emptied from the move. So much better! Now to rest muscles 🤣 The #gardening life 😁

BIL got out of the hospital today; other BIL had a birthday; hubs is getting over the worst from chemo; got rained out on finishing the garden paths (so I could rest my back!🤣); put up 32 cups of peppers & onions for stir fry and gifted neighbors with peppers & tomatoes.

Today’s work - putting cardboard (recycled our moving boxes) and wood chips on our garden paths (because I’m tired of the weeds winning!). We traded mowing (and saved ourselves an eyesore) for the wood chips 😁

Quiet day here at the Farmlet-let 🙃 Hubs lost a sister-in-law yesterday, which on top of the loss brings his mortality to the front of his mind - all happening just after another Med adjustment fiasco.

We put almost 100 oz of bell pepper/onion/shallot/leek/celery mix into the freezer yesterday. Rural SW IA price savings: $45 (leeks priced out of Omaha, can’t get them at our store.) That’s using only half the peppers we picked yesterday. This afternoon’s experiment: homemade bacon.

My favorite way to process tomatoes. This was a 6 qt Instant Pot full; a more manageable volume now! The Pot does it’s thing (covered with a fryer screen) while I do other things 😁 The seeds/skins gets turned into tomato powder.

We have a path - and reminders of muscles we forgot about 🤣 I’m planning on a clover bed in front of the nesting boxes (their favorite treat) and a flier & herb bed on the other side. The birds be stylin’! 😁

Hubs and I were digging the path for a brick walkway to the chicken coop; turned around & saw Tobi supervising by the open gate 🤣 He’s a good boy; he got to where he could see us & laid down.
We didn’t close the back door all the way 🫣. Never blame a good boy for your own mistake ❤️

Glow Boy, everyone 🥰 We call him that because last year he had treatments so radioactive he had to isolate away from me & the pups for a week after each one. His niece said we should make it stick, so we did!

Spent today on the chicken pen roof & digging potatoes until hubs’ blood sugar plummeted - more Med adjustments to go (most were prescribed 75 lbs ago). We plan & adjust 😊Borage attracts pollinators but likes to self seed prolifically 🫣 At least the flowers taste like cucumber 😁

Both the old border and old vet told us getting Tobi (White Shepherd) would be bad for Mitch (Husky) because Tobi would dominate him. They were wrong (hence the ‘old’ part.) They also said Mitch (a rescue) was ‘high energy’ - he was stressed.

The perfect for us steaks - reverse seared! One filet and one New York Strip (1 1/2” thick) seasoned with Penzy’s Chicago Steak seasoning; convection oven at 250 until meat thermometer read 115, then seared in a cast iron pan with grape seed oil & butter. 🤤 Veg from our garden.

We’re resting today - spent several hours weeding along this property across the alley from us, and took out a trailer load of weeds. We get a nicer view, and wood chips for our garden paths from the property owner - win/win 😁 Never hurts to ask 🤷♀️ The worst they could have said was no 🤣🤣

Checking on one of our self-sufficient experiments today - stevia leaves in one jar, stems in the other steeping In tequila (all I had on hand at the time) since 7/22. Stems are about half as sweet as the leaves but still worth doing. Comes out green but who cares in coffee or tea? 🤣
