Running With Scissors all done! It’s one of those projects that make you step back and say “I did THIS???!!!”
02:33 PM - Dec 07, 2023
Today is Election Day (city offices, school board) and it’s going to be nuts. Former mayor (yuck) orchestrated a write in campaign; write ins won’t be counted until tomorrow. FB is full of people complaining about lack of services and simultaneously complaining about rate increases 🤷♀️ SPKOS.

I’m watching Iconic America: Our Symbols and Stories with David Rubenstein (Prime, PBS Documentaries) and I learned something new about the Statue of Liberty having roots in the ending of slavery in the US.
It’s a good day to learn something new 😊

2 Take a Stand bags done, and all the many parts for Running With Scissors all prepped. Freezing overnight temps start tomorrow pm, so the rest of the garden & hibiscus get harvested tomorrow - sewing takes a pause for food prep!

#FunWithFabric 😁 Working on #byAnnie Running With Scissors and both sizes of the companion Take a Stand for a coordinated set. Fabrics are Tangled Threads (Whimsicsls, circa 2010ish) - RWS is a slow along. #Sewing , #Quilting , & the slow along group are leaving little time for worrying!

5 Threaded Spouts
Hubs’ chemo bills have skyrocketed since he got dropped from Medicaid, and even with all we’ve done to be self reliant, I haven’t found a way through yet. I doubt I will.
So I spent $10 on a sew along class, moved one of my machines in an unfinished corner of our living room.

At the #Farmlet today- Hibiscus is finally blooming (harvesting 1-2 oz of calyxes per day) and for the first time we got 4 eggs (we have 5 hens and 1 rooster.)
Still bringing in tomatoes and peppers, the fall crops of betts, peas & Lima beans are looking good and leeks are ready to harvest!

The great hibiscus experiment: $7.49 for 30 seeds, a summer of fretting waiting for blooms, and we’re finally getting them! I’ll be harvesting the calyxes for herbal tea.
The first time growing hibiscus for us. One less thing we have to buy 😁

I’m calling this project done until spring! 2 pallets of antique brick and 5 cubic yards of wood chips all by hand. It’s a joy to walk the garden now, so totally worth it❤️
Not bad for two old folks 😁

A good morning’s work - Cherokee Purple tomatoes made into seasoned sauce for chili, pasta, tacos, and more, in perfect for us sizes 😁
Penzy’s herbs for the seasoning (Mural of Flavor so we can season to cuisines later.) Try Penzy’s - you won’t be disappointed!

We’ve made good progress on the garden paths, using up a good portion of the brick pile and using up all the boxes emptied from the move. So much better! Now to rest muscles 🤣 The #gardening life 😁
10:16 PM - Sep 18, 2023
BIL got out of the hospital today; other BIL had a birthday; hubs is getting over the worst from chemo; got rained out on finishing the garden paths (so I could rest my back!🤣); put up 32 cups of peppers & onions for stir fry and gifted neighbors with peppers & tomatoes.
A very good day 😊

3 Threaded Spouts
Sister-in-Law’s funeral was last Sunday, and hubs couldn’t go - halfway across the country, on very short notice and he had chemo. He was upset, but agreed he should stay home.
His brother is now in the hospital, and several other family members are sick with Covid.

Today’s work - putting cardboard (recycled our moving boxes) and wood chips on our garden paths (because I’m tired of the weeds winning!). We traded mowing (and saved ourselves an eyesore) for the wood chips 😁

Quiet day here at the Farmlet-let 🙃 Hubs lost a sister-in-law yesterday, which on top of the loss brings his mortality to the front of his mind - all happening just after another Med adjustment fiasco.
Comfort food time - lasagna with our home grown veggies. I need better mozzarella.

Hubs was getting an estimate on having 4 ton of Rock brought in for parking this winter - and was walking the guy thru the area we decided wouldn’t work, ignoring the area we staked out yesterday am. Not his fault; his thinking isn’t always clear.
Some days I don’t think I’m up to this.

As I look at the September budget, I’m planning for the potential govt shutdown - not easy with only SS and all the medical.
Regardless, I’m perfectly ok if Biden/Dems say ‘enough, shut it down until the horseshit ends.’
I just wish everyone else on SS could feel the same. I know they can’t.

The heat bubble burst here in SW IA, at least for a couple of days. Lots of outside projects to catch up on and still making my list of shade flowers to order this fall. When life sucks, I dig in the dirt 🤪
That, and I’m preparing for a govt shutdown by putting meals up & making a plan. 😉

Of course there is another option - and Aetna won’t cover it 🤬 I’ve got more calls to make, but Doc let hubs know this treatment isn’t adding months to his life, it’s adding years - so we continue on.
03:29 PM - Aug 24, 2023
We’re off to the Oncologist in the morning - hubs is having an ‘I’m done with chemo, it costs too much’ moment. Luckily we have a good team; their job tomorrow is to reassure him that he’s doing better with it, and it’s necessary. Maybe there’s an option that’s less than $13k/mo.

Today’s experiment: smoked meatloaf & homemade bacon. Riffs off these recipes:

Saw my Doc today & BP was a bit elevated. He looked at me, and I told him DD is in San Diego. We moved on.
2 takeaways: 1) when you find a reasonable doc, hang on to them - they’re rare and 2) if you’re a caretaker, take care of yourself ❤️ Don’t forget to advocate for yourself too.

We put almost 100 oz of bell pepper/onion/shallot/leek/celery mix into the freezer yesterday. Rural SW IA price savings: $45 (leeks priced out of Omaha, can’t get them at our store.) That’s using only half the peppers we picked yesterday. This afternoon’s experiment: homemade bacon.
08:23 AM - Aug 21, 2023
My favorite way to process tomatoes. This was a 6 qt Instant Pot full; a more manageable volume now! The Pot does it’s thing (covered with a fryer screen) while I do other things 😁 The seeds/skins gets turned into tomato powder.
11:48 AM - Aug 20, 2023
Our garden haul this morning. I think Glow Boy wants to make sure I’m not bored being stuck inside this afternoon 🤪 Peppers, tomatoes, stevia, celery and a cantaloupe 😁
