Some Black (domestic, hair) History: This is a hot comb. Many generations of Black women in the U.S. pressed their hair with it after heating up on a stove, to straighten their hair if they didn’t have “good hair.” This is the one my mother used on my hair when I was growing up.

I love this time of year because it's Italian prune plum season. I use them to make a rustic prune plum pie. I make my own pie crust, too. Anyway... the pie should be cool enough to slice into now.

Throwback Thursday (in objects): This is the pencil sharpener I grew up with. It has been in the laundry room in my parents' house for as long as I can remember. Mom and Dad in 1966. The pencil sharpener and my dad are still there. (RIP Mom).

Today is my birthday. Yesterday, judo class gave me cupcakes and a balloon to celebrate. This is the first mylar balloon I've ever had. They can stay aloft for a while before they start drooping, I'm told. After this photo was taken, my sensei and classmates threw me, a birthday tradition.

My delightful mother died a year ago this month. I miss her every day, but I don't feel so bad anymore. She lived a good, long life (made it to 94). I've started keeping a journal again because it's a way for me to talk to her. Pic from when Mom was in her early 20s. One of my faves.
