I've had such wonderful recent experiences with doctors that when a new Dr. immediately went into full-asshole mode at my consultation today, just WOW. Maybe he had a bad day, but 3 staff members were in the room also, looking like nothing was out of the ordinary. Time to consult with someone else!

Yet another present-wrapping #DailyPictureTheme photo! Often my children's friends wanted birthday $$$ to save up for something, and we'd find a creative way to do that. Here the wrapping "paper" — $21 in ones — was itself the gift. The box wasn't totally #empty though; the birthday card was inside.

I had made a wrapping-paper sheet out of 21 one-dollar bills in seven rows of three columns. I alternated bill fronts and backs like a checkerboard, and put tape over the seams on the back side of the "paper" to hold them together, and the "paper" wrapped very neatly around the small box that was slightly-over one bill's-width wide, and slightly over five bill's-heights long. In the photo the wrapped box is sitting on the sidewalk in our backyard, with our (much loved and missed) black cat Balor crouched down beside it.

I'm a longtime volunteer at the Idea Fab Labs maker/hacker/art-space. My face isn't visible in this photo but my nametag is, & I'm showing people how to use our augmented-reality virtual-topography-&-water sandbox at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History's 2015 #GLOW Festival.

The sandbox is about 4' x 3' and, yes, full of sand. It's mounted at a comfortable height to play with while standing, with a 3D camera & a projector mounted above it. The camera measures the mountains, valleys, & plains that people create while using their hands to dig & pile up sand, & the projector projects a topographic map (including simulated water for areas of the sand that are "below sea level") onto the sand in response to what the camera sees, so that snow-capped mountains, lakes, & so on are colored in real time as you create them. In the photo the room is very dark except for the sandbox illuminated by its projector. A little kid is heaping up a big mountain of sand, a hollow mountain is next to it, & the sand is in different bright colors depending on height/depth. I'm standing on the other side of the sandbox from the camera, with my name TANÉ on my shirt in bright-red LEDs. BTW, the sandbox also includes buttons for rain, drought, Earth color scheme, & Mars color scheme.

#LegoWednesday My son Arthur and his friend Alex show off their #Lego "UFO"-theme spaceships (the "Cyber Saucer" and the "Alien Avenger") and promo masks, January 1999.

Two children, Arthur age 4 and Alex age 9, are wearing dark clothes, holding Lego flying saucers, and have their faces covered by dark Lego promo masks that were included with some Lego "UFO"-theme sets. The masks are black plastic with some "alien" detailing in the molding and color accents, and don't cover people's whole heads, but wrap around their faces and taper/angle down over their chins, with eye openings also tapering/angling down toward their chins. UFO-theme sets like these are mostly gray and black and transparent yellow-green. The Cyber Saucer is a flying saucer about 10 inches in diameter with large landing-gear legs, and the Alien Avenger is a flying saucer about 17 inches in diameter.

Some people talk omelets & breaking eggs, but doncha know ya gotta #ruin your piñata to get the treats? My 4th DPT piñata photo finds everyone scrambling for the golden treasure chest's contents at my children Violet & Arthur's Greek-&-Roman-mythology birthday party, 11/16/2002.

I used to make some pretty big & fancy piñatas, but a consequence of really layering on the paper mache was that it'd take a long time to first breach the piñata, and then another long time before it would finally get totally destroyed & emptied. Not that that's a bad thing — everyone gets lots of turns with the bat, including a lot of turns that just produce a few candies and toys as the openings gradually get enlarged, before there's the one final blow that spills out all the rest — but in this case it was dark by the time it was all over. So, yes, in the dark of night the photo shows a whole bunch of (clothed) kids' butts as they're crouching over or on hands and knees collecting the goodies. The golden treasure check piñata still has some shiny gold flat surfaces remaining, but with some torn newspaper layers hanging out and crumpled here & there on the ground. It's hanging from a backyard apple tree branch, and boy is that apple tree a lot bigger now, 22 years later.

And on that anniversary, here's a page from Marie Arana's book LatinoLand: A Portrait of America's Largest and Least Understood Minority (with a typo: 1822 should be 1882) noting that the whole racist "border" hysteria/militarization thing in the United States actually began as anti-Chinese racism.

#Gate of the Winds cast photo June 1997. This "adventurous musical fantasy" "in the form of a traditional Celtic tale with some modern twists" was the 1st play my daughter Violet ever performed in. She's at far-right here in costume as the Spirit of Winter & also played a squire.

35 kids immediately-post-performance, ranging in age from maybe 6 or so to teens, in medieval/fantasy costumes, squinting into the sun and standing or seated in the grass, holding the flowers they'd received when taking their bows onstage.

My son Arthur was yearbook editor for some years in HS (+ 1 in college), including a lot of graphic design. He designed/printed the 2011/2012 yearbook in two different cover versions with #caution tape, though the school made him change the chemicals bits for the final printing.

Some items on the wall, including the two 2011/2012 yearbook-front-cover options students could choose from, and the back-cover shared by both. Both front covers say "AFE YEARBOOK 11-12" on the top and "ALTERNATIVE FAMILY EDUCATION" on the bottom in white text on purple. The top version of the cover has a photo of a student painting "Unto thy own self be true" on a mural on the side of a school building, and the bottom version has a student with a giant slice of bread around his head riding on a giant meowing kitten head. Both covers also have a caution-tape strip (the top one says "CAUTION: INCREDIBLE" and the bottom "CAUTION: BRILLIANT") and a scalloped purple circle with white text inside (the top one says "CONTAINS NO MIND-ALTERING CHEMICALS!" and the bottom "CONTAINS MIND-ALTERING CHEMICALS!"). The back cover has a student's face with a giant slice of bread around it and rays coming out of it, with "KEEP THE SUN UP! BUY WAR BONDS" as a nod to WWII Marvel comics.

#comics is trending, so why not share a wild panel from a recent Avengers comic? A fearful A.I. got on social media, and as Spider-Woman explains, "It doesn't know how to separate reality from extremism, so it's gravitating toward the loud, confident voices. It's learning [...] anger and hatred."

Captain America (Sam Wilson version) and Spider-Woman are seen from behind on the sides of the panel, gaping at a character in a light blue spandex outfit with a billowing yellow hood and cape, a black mask, and some kind of electric currents going on around his body, who announces, "ADRIAN IS OFFLINE. I AM D.U.D.E-B.R.O. DEBATE ME."

During my son Arthur's first two undergrad years, he & his debate partner Avery were stars on the Whitman College Parliamentary Debate team. The Hunter Conservatory building was debate HQ, and seeing as they have actual legs, this #lamp and its twin literally stood guard outside.

Hunter Conservatory is a fancy building (especially on the inside) which you don't see much of here because the photo is focused on one of the two lamps standing outside on either side of the front entrance. The lamp has a frosted-white orb on top of a tall metal pole (with lots of flourishes and detailing that I don't know the technical terms for) which has an oxidized blue-green patina color. At the bottom the pole is standing on four crouching legs. I don't know what kind of animal legs they're supposed to represent - lion, dog, a mythological creature, ???

I've taken so many photos over the years of good times on grassy yards and parks, but today decided to go for something a little more odd, featuring among other things real and painted #grass together. The mural is long gone now, but was along Bay St. in Santa Cruz. June 4, 1995.

A temporary wall of big wooden boards with a big mural painted on it, and that had some kind of construction going on behind. The mural features a large wooly mammoth walking along a grassy, hilly strip next to the ocean, and behind the mammoth a tree with the sign "The Santa Cruz City Museum of Natural History Monterey Bay Region Mammoth and Mastodon Preserve Est. 14,037 B.C.".

#LegoWednesday #Lego knights and friends keeping busy in my about-to-turn-seven daughter Violet's bookshelf, September 15, 1995.

The photo is focusing on one compartment of a bright-green-painted wooden bookshelf where Violet had built an elaborate Lego scene. There are two multi-story castles where each level is a single room with a single figure engaged in something, like a king with a treasure chest and a wizard with a wand. A blue baseplate serves as water for some knights (and parrots) in boats. I can see a dragon and a horse, but in general there are a lot of knights engaged in various activities, including being on top of a tall palm tree. Small portions of some of the other compartments in the bookshelf and the books they contain are also visible.

#SpoutibleBakes Apple-cherry galette, using the (few) cherries left over from last week's golden crown ring rolls. I figured I wouldn't have time for a photo shoot because people were already waiting for slices, but then I had the idea to just photograph myself taking it out of the toaster oven. 😁

A galette is a "rustic" tart made by rolling the crust dough into a big circle, putting the filling in the middle, and then folding the edges over in a nice overlapping pattern with the filling showing in the middle. I think most people make them on a cookie sheet, but I use a pie pan which I think is easier to deal with, so the galette is in a silvery-metal pie pan. The crust is golden-brown with cinnamon and sugar sprinkled on it, and the filling's cinnamon-sprinkled apple slices and cherries are visible in the center. And yes, my oven-mitt-covered hand is in process of taking it out of the toaster oven right after it had finished baking. (We've also got a gas oven, but I don't use it any more to avoid fossil fuels, and it doesn't work very well anyway - some day we'll get a new electric oven.)

#SpoutibleBakes Blueberry-crumb muffins just out of the oven - notice the crumb-topping continental #drift over the blueberry-batter world-oceans! Why are the oceans so blue? Well, frozen berries generally leak lots of juice when you’re mixing them into batter after thawing them.

A silvery-metal muffin pan containing 12 blueberry muffins with crumb topping. If I had made these when the backyard blueberries were ripe, they would have been golden brown around the berries, but yeah, with frozen berries a lot of juice leaks out while mixing. I'd expect the batter to be more purply, but this particular batch was made with Trader Joe’s organic frozen “wild” blueberries, which are very tiny, and maybe the coloring is different? Anyway, the muffins are a light blue with dark berries showing here and there, and as they rose in the oven, the brown "crumb" topping that had originally completely covered the top of each muffin's worth of batter, split up into basically continents as the tops of the muffins expanded while baking.

The undersea-themed joint party for my children Violet & Arthur's 12th and 6th birthdays included this giant pearlescent #pearl piñata I made (though by the time I took this photo it had gotten pretty smashed in on one side & was raining candy & toys with each whack), 9/23/2000.

Happy children taking turns hitting the giant pearl piñata with a lightweight kids'-baseball-set bat as it hangs from a branch of our backyard apple tree. The piñata had been a sphere that I made by covering a very large balloon with newspaper-strips paper mache and then pearlescent white paint, but with all the whacking has gotten pretty smashed in on one side with some paper-mache sections hanging down from it or lying in the grass. You see Violet from the back holding the bat, and the other children (including Arthur in a turquoise shirt) are holding bags to collect candy and toys (like little plastic sea creatures) in, some crouched down on the ground ready to grab more contents as they fall.

On Halloween 2010 my son Arthur asked me to carve a pumpkin of the iconic The Great Gatsby cover but sadly I didn't finish by trick-or-treat time: The falling #tear looks too much like an❗, I got hardly any of the landscape done at all, & many details weren't visible in the dark.

I remember all the trouble I used to have trying all the light settings on my old camera to try to get good pumpkin photos. With this one the light shining through the cover image's flapper face's eyes, eyebrows, lips, tear, and the three dots next to the left eye is very vivid and clear, but none of the carving details that didn't cut all the way through the pumpkin shell are visible at all, and everything around the face details is so dark that you can't even see the outline of the pumpkin. But one more note on the bright side is that I thought that the clear marbles with swirls on them that I placed in the eyes did a great job of standing in for the irises with little nudes in them as seen on the cover.

I previously featured my Storm Lego X-Men minifig & others in my April 10 non- #DailyPictureTheme spout shown here, but as you can see I have a much larger #Storm too, here riding Xena's horse Argo. No, they're not usually in front of my monitor like this, but rather on the right side of my laptop.

Definitely a busy photo to describe. A large (maybe Barbie size) action figure of Storm from Marvel's X-Men series is riding a large Breyer version of Xena's palomino horse Argo in front of my external monitor, which is connected to my laptop which is partly visible on the right edge of the photo. Storm as a character has had many costumes and hairstyles over the years, but this action figure has her original look of long white hair held back by a black tiara, a gold-trimmed black cape which also attaches to gold bracelets on her wrists, black boots going to above her knees, and a black bathing-suit-like outfit of which only the very top is visible in the photo. Also seen around the monitor are lots of Lego minfigs along the top and left edges, lots of Android figures below it, and Star Trek Discovery's Michael Burnam (in her Science Officer days) riding a "Spectral Dragon" Windstone Editions figure at bottom left.

In 2011 Santa Cruz Pride (50 years strong next year!) got moved indoors due to thunderstorms, which made for an interesting change of #pace , like the whole Civic Auditorium was a giant queer clubhouse with a nonstop party, + more going on in all the little rooms off the halls.

I walked up to the top of the bleachers in the back of the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium to take this from-above photo of the Santa Cruz Pride Festival in its unusual location in 2011. Onstage is the opening band "Kissing Cousins" from LA, with some attendees sitting in folding chairs watching them. Organizations and vendors have tables instead of their usual outdoor booths, and there are lots of people standing around talking and so on. The Civic Auditorium also has a lot of bleacher seats on both sides and in back -- a little of this is visible on the far edges of the photo, but it's pretty dark

Some nice subtle light effects in the #spray here as my son Arthur & one of his best friends were dousing themselves (with water and repent!) on the trampoline back in 2009. Jumping with water balloons of all shapes and sizes until they burst & sprayed everyone was also popular.

#LegoWednesday My almost-nine-years-old daughter Violet at the Santa Cruz County Fair with her Lego-contest entry "Planet Mechanicai", September 7, 1997. She won first place in her age division.

Violet and her entry are front and center in this photo I took in one of the big buildings at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. Violet has long dark-brown hair with bangs, and is wearing a white "LEGO CLUB" T-shirt that Lego had been selling at the time. "Planet Mechanicai" features a lot of robot constructions, some on dark flat Lego space-theme baseplates, and some on a long raised baseplate that might be from a Megabloks desert theme or something like that, but also looks fine as a moonscape sort of thing.

Live Oak Grange Hall has 10 wonderful 15-foot #long tables that fold out from the wall like Murphy Beds. I'll be back there again on Saturday for a "before" celebration of life for a very-long-time friend who just got a horrific surprise very-late-stage cancer diagnosis. 😢😢😢

One of the ten fifteen-foot-long fold-out tables at the Live Oak Grange Hall in the unincorporated "Live Oak" area of Santa Cruz County, just covered with containers of all kinds of food. (What looks like panels or doors between the windows visible in the photo are actually more of these tables.) The table, floor, and much of the walls are a beautiful medium-brown wood. I took this photo at the July 12, 2014 Santa Cruz Regional All-Day Sing event.

My dalmatian-costumed son Arthur gives a big #hug to my daughter Violet, spring 1998. 6 years apart, they were pretty much joined at the hip in lots of ways until Violet left for college, & have remained very close (though now living on opposite sides of the country) ever since.

The photo shows Violet from behind, from the mid-back up, her long brown hair hanging down over a white sweatshirt, and Arthur, probably on tiptoes, in a furry dalmatian costume, peeking over Violet's shoulder with his arms around her in a big hug.

#SpoutibleBakes My childhood-fave "golden crown ring rolls", each roll as usual dipped in butter & cinnamon-sugar, each roll not as usual having two cherries hidden inside. I didn't photograph the hot-out-of-the-oven full pan, because people (but not sleepy cats) were waiting to eat them right away.

Our tabby-and-white cat Oswald is lying on the bed with his mouth open in a small yawn (i.e. the part of the yawn either right before or right after the super-giant-yawn-full-of-fangs part) and his eyes closed. Right behind his head and back is a 13-inch by 9-inch metal pan with seven of the original fifteen rolls still remaining. They had been rolled into balls when I had put them in the pan, but expanding to fill space as they rose, each one basically became a cube. A lot of buttery cinnamon sugar is visible on the top of each roll.

There are a *lot* of Little Free Libraries here in Santa Cruz, but this "LITTLE #FREE NURSERY" (seen on yet another one of my early-pandemic early-morning social-distancing walks back on May 18, 2020) was a new one to me. Note also the fairy garden at lower-right.

The corner of a fenced-in area of someone's yard, with weathered wooden fence posts and wire mesh between them. "LITTLE FREE NURSERY" is painted on a board at the top, and inside there are various plants growing in the ground and a large galvanized container of various plastic pots labeled "POTS". The fairy garden at lower right is set off by a miniature white-picket fence, and contains some tiny perhaps-ceramic-or-resin figures of a fairy sitting on a round yellow squash, a mushroom house and other mushrooms, and a fox; plus some real pinecones.

Obviously our-much-loved-and-missed Mustache Cat had no interest in smoking or vaping this #weed , though he did enjoy getting high (up into the raised bed), and he loved loved loved the edibles he could get here - gophers, voles, rats, and mice.

Longhaired "Mustache Cat" peacefully snoozes in the dirt in a raised garden bed full of tall marijuana plants, his right hind leg, tail, and right front paw hanging over the edge. Usually he looked like a black and white cat, but in some light/photos, like here, a lot of brown shows up also.
