Survivors know Ms. Tina Turner.

She became a beacon to women who *needed to see her live & thrive after escaping horrible abuse. She left America & the nonstop jokes folk made at her expense. It still happens. My mother, a survivor, danced to Tina more than any other singer. RIP

Today marks the anniversary of the birth of Malcolm X (05.19.1925). Malcolm influenced Black culture in many ways, especially with music. His impact on #hiphop and #rap alone is immeasurable. Here, we'll share some of our favorite examples of Malcolm's cultural impact. #wokesongs #MalcolmX

Happy heavenly birthday to Thomas Wright “Fats” Waller! Born this day 05.21.1904 in New York, NY. Jazz historians call Fats “The Father of Jazz Piano.” He was a master of the stride piano—a highly rhythmic technique that evolved from ragtime. #FatsWaller #Jazz #ragtime #stridepiano

Ragtime surpassed minstrel shows as the most famous music. Why? Because if given a choice, people seek out the authentic alternative even though the powers that be worked hard to segregate society. Ragtime was the first Black art form Whites interacted with en masse—and they loved it. #ragtime

There is no other instrument as closely associated with Americana than the banjo. It is the foundation of our "roots music" and a crucial part of many genres, such as ragtime, early jazz & blues, folk, country, and bluegrass. To see it as a "white instrument" only would deny its African roots.

You know how on Name That Tune contestants go back & forth saying how many notes they can Name That Tune? That’s republican states right now.
“I can eliminate gay rights”
“I can eliminate interstate travel”
“I will all ban books”
“I will enslave darkies”

“Ok, Bob, take that right!”

The last video images drawn are (r) a Black man running up the hill with his banjo, followed by (l) a White man in pursuit with hounds (barking) and holding a shotgun: (l) a runaway "slave" vs. a "slave" catcher. Why draw that?

Because Black music history is the story of America. #banjo

Fascism isn't knocking at the door; it has kicked the door in and completely taken over the GOP. The dog whistles are now bull horns, the subtext is now text, and its hate and ignorance proudly march publicly—no need for white robes and hooded sheets. #Tennessee

First spout: this week I called on elected prosecutors around the country to stand up to the threats & intimidation tactics being used against the Manhattan DA. Critique cases, criticize decisions, litigate in court, but threats against prosecutors don’t belong in a democracy.

On this day, March 28, 1971, Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' reached no.1 on the Billboard R&B Album charts. Not bad for an album full of #wokesongs that Berry Gordy originally believed couldn't be a commercial success. #MarvinGaye

Sly & The Family Stone, Stand (1969). Being heavily infused with Black gospel tradition is a hallmark of many #wokesongs —and this uplifting Sly tune is no different. Rose Stone (Sly's sister) says the only studio advice he gave her was: "Just do what you do in church!" #Woke #gospel #funk #soul

Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Rock Me (1938). Part of being #Woke means you're on the cutting edge and SEE movements before others (hence, WOKE). We include this song because Sister Rosetta saw the future. Long before Chuck Berry and #Elvis she ushered in the "rock era" with this gospel tune. #wokesongs
