So #FirstWaveSpoutible confession and this might be 1 of ?: I voted to not have "adult content" on #Spoutible without thinking things through and I bet I am not the only one. I voted that way because I knew exactly what I mean by "adult content" without remembering that isn't universally agreed 1/?

For those who don’t know, I’m one of the first two women to go on the record with my real name about sexual harassment from Alex Kozinski, the former Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit.
It’s not just the romance—I think a lot about the ways we *need* to talk to have hard but necessary discussions.

Courtney is probably one of the people I trust the most to see a site's TOS for what they are and how they will be used to harm artists.
You would be wise to follow her and *listen* to what she's saying. Don't talk over these concerns.

Courtney Milan @courtneymilanY’all please don’t tell people who are wondering whether this site is going to pull a Tumblr and make it impossible to talk about the thing they do for a living that they’re “just getting mad” because we “want to make controversy.”11:48 AM - Feb 19, 2023

Seriously, this is a tough topic and I'm hoping this whole discussion leads to policy innovation. Sex workers need a safe place to organize and network, but people need to be able to opt in to seeing NSFW content. The 🐦 wasn't good at either, IMO

while I’m not an adult content creator, I am colleagues with a lot of people who support themselves with said content. my hope for Spoutible is to allow acknowledgment of that content to give everyone the chance at a platform here.

If you’re going to argue that it’s specific enough, please use the actual language that’s in the policy. What the hell does “sexually suggestive” mean?
And yes, that’s the point—figuring out what the hell the policy means so I can leave if necessary.

This is a generous offer, @cbouzy There’s a huge community of writers&readers called Romancelandia & an equally large group of YA (young adult) readers w writers whose YA books are being banned simply for including LBGTQ characters. We are all on edge. Please let @courtneymilan help you clarify.
12:25 PM - Feb 19, 2023
I don’t think the people who wrote the policy thought about the ways people talk about sex. Are we are going to argue whether HBO’s GOT is more rapey than the book series? Are we gonna discuss if that one sex scene in Bridgerton is a rape? Can I screenshot a court case about harassment?
11:51 AM - Feb 19, 2023
And like, this: “Exceptions may be made for medical, health, educational or artistic content.”
Is not good language. The proper language starts with “nothing in this policy prevents discussion of ___” and the list has to be longer.

Whatever you think of adult content on this site directly, this is not good language, it’s not good policy, and it is extremely fixable. @cbouzy I am happy to help try to come up with a policy that provides clear guidance, meets general aims of external bodies, while preserving necessary discussion.

In response to Ramona Grigg.
This is a terrible answer. Why should people have to put their access to the platform at risk because the policy is vaguely written, and explicitly states that exceptions “may” be made and so there’s no direct answer?

Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066 authorized the military to incarcerate Japanese Americans in camps like the one at Santa Anita Race Track where Japanese Americans, like 17-year-old Ted Fujioka, were forced to live in barracks and horse stables.

Hey @Spoutible @cbouzy You really need to narrow this policy down. The goal should be to allow Spoutible to block abusive content, not just anything that seems remotely sexual. Give users options on what they want filtered and what they don’t. And maybe an image blurring setting like Mastadon has.
Courtney Milan @courtneymilanJust to be clear: I’m pretty sure that posting links to romance novels that contain sex scenes violates this policy.09:17 AM - Feb 19, 2023
