Would indicted Cuellar flip Republican in return for amnesty? Probs. Hell, if I were him, I would, too. The dude's guilt as sin.

I agree completely that Republicans have been hypocrites about democracy for decades.

And it didn't matter. Just saying the words insincerely helped reinforce that we all aspired to democracy.

And when the GOP stopped pretending, their voters stopped with them. Words do matter.

I know! Everyone could tell Republicans weren't sincere about democracy. They were just saying the words for political correctness.

But it made a difference, even as a pro forma recitation. We can tell, now that they've stopped pretending.

That's one reason I'm surprised. I thought when Republicans wincingly reinforced democracy, everyone could tell it was pro forma. I thought we were discounting it as political correctness.

And I was wrong. Even fake reinforcement worked. We can see it now that they've stopped even that.

As frustrating as I find it, Biden is an old-school pol, willing to talk with Republicans most of the time. He's always looking for compromise.

So, yeah, although it's a pretty low bar, he's a better man than me.

I remember when Ronald Reagan won the Presidency. I went outside into the cold, snowy night and looked up in despair. He wasn't a good man. He wasn't honest. He was a huckster. I knew the next four years were going to really suck.

But I was wrong. It was eight years.

We forget the past faster than we should — me, too! I'm frequently shocked when I review, say, Obama's fight for the ACA, or Bush's runup to the Iraq war. I don't know how I could have forgotten so much trauma, but I did.

I don't think the corporate media are promoting fascism. They're just monetary cowards terrified of saying anything that might cost them eyeballs this quarter, no matter the long-term consequences to their bottom line.

It's what's wrong with most corporations these days.

I don't think I understand. "Not going to jail" isn't the point of illegality. It's a cynical benefit of being rich enough to bend the criminal justice system over a desk so you can have your way with it.

Trump has shown us that the courts can be defeated with money and endless legal posturing.

He's guilty, and he's winning. Put those two ideas together. Hell, Trump's even raising cash from the failed prosecutions.

Here's an idea: Isn't there a law that you can't profit from illegality?

I felt the same way about Michael Steele. I remember his words and deeds as RNC chair.

But yeah, I listen to him now because he's telling me the truth (unlike back then), and it's stuff I wouldn't know if he hadn't told me.

My point is that Trump's nonsense isn't his failure. This is a failure of our judicial system. We always knew Trump simply couldn't stop himself. He's as manic and deranged as always.

This is on the courts. What can we do to fix what's obviously broken? Put Trump in pre-trial detention.

I think we can assume that the judge's adult daughter is not a public figure. Trump's attacks are slanderous and, with luck, libelous.

But for some reason, "He commits multiple crimes daily while on bail" doesn't seem to carry the stigma that it used to.

What was supposed to happen next? I forget…

Well, yes, Trump's Easter announcements are... unique.

"Death and destruction shall rain down on you, your things, family, sheep and pigs. Your walls will crumble as you live in terror and pain to your dying day! I swear this on the blood of my two sons and dead wife!"

"Oh, and happy Easter!"

My point is that we should stand behind our decisions. There's no benefit in pretending.

And yet, we keep pretending we don't know Republicans are bad-faith liars. We pretend we don't expect Trump to stage a second insurrection. We pretend MAGA goons aren't terrorists.

Why? What's in it for us?

I am thankful that Trump is so terrible at everything he touches. He's so obviously corrupt and awful!

I'm terrified at the idea of someone as vile as Trump but who was smarter. Our democracy would have disappeared in a heartbeat.

Weirdly, no, I don't think either Sen. Ron Johnson or former Rep. Devin Nunes are directly paid from Russian coffers. (Not like Trump, who's been pocketing millions for decades.)

I think they're just shallow, stupid psychopaths willing to let thousands of innocent die if it advances their careers.
