These two neighboring galaxies are 150,000 light-years from each other. The distance feels a lot closer when you remember that our neighbor Andromeda is 2.5 million light-years away from our galaxy. In galactic terms, they’re practically on top of one another.

Two galaxies are prominent among many much smaller background galaxies in the darkness of space. The larger galaxy is an elliptical galaxy, radiating light in a perfectly even sphere from a bright center. It is brightest in the center and fades gradually to its edges. It appears off center to the left. The smaller galaxy is a barred spiral, with arms that are wispy like fog connected to a bar crossing the galaxy’s shining core. The shape of the arms appear notably squarish. It is off center toward the top right.

The planet Uranus on a black background. The planet appears blue with a large white patch taking up its right half. The patch is whitest at the center, then fades into blue at it expands from right to left. A thin outline of Uranus is also white. Around the planet is a system of nested rings. The outermost ring is the brightest while the innermost ring is the faintest. Unlike Saturn’s horizontal rings, the rings of Uranus are vertical and so they appear to surround the planet in an oval shape. There are nine blueish white dots scattered around the rings.

The galaxy on the left has a single, large spiral arm curving out from the core toward 3 o’clock and wrapping counterclockwise, ending in a straighter line pointing toward the bottom of the frame. This arm is bright blue with shades of brown mixed in. The right-hand galaxy has a bright core that is approximately the same size as the galaxy at left, but only a tiny bit of very faint material surrounds it. A broad curtain of gas connects the two galaxies’ cores and hangs beneath them. Small stars and galaxies are scattered throughout the black background of space.

In a field crowded with stars, a funnel-shaped region of space appears darker than its surroundings with fewer stars. It is wider at the top edge of the image, narrowing towards the bottom. Toward the narrow end of this dark region a small clump of red and white appears to shoot out streamers upward and left. A large, bright cyan-colored area surrounds the lower portion of the funnel-shaped dark area, forming a rough U shape. The cyan-colored area has needle-like, linear structures and becomes more diffuse in the center of the image. The right side of the image is dominated by clouds of orange and red, with a purple haze.

Looking in from the outer edge of a dusty, spinning disk surrounding a bright center star, which is illustrated as an indistinct bright region in the center of the disk. Rays of light emanate from the central area. A dark gap in the disk appears between the bright core and the dusty, hazy outer regions, which build up slightly as you move outward, so that the core appears sunken. The outer disk has some bands of varying thickness, in varying shades of orange.

$A young star-forming region is filled with wispy purple, green, and red layers of gas and dust. A cavity filled with purple ionized gas is seen toward the center, and in the very center cavity is a brighter white and pink in an irregular oval shape. There are browns, greens, and reds behind the purple region. To the right, at the periphery, is denser gas and dust in shades of bright green and darker brown. There is a large spray of yellow, orange, red, and purple toward the top center, and the nebula fades to near black to the right. There are thousands of stars sprinkled across the field, concentrated toward the center, but they generally appear fainter. The brightest sources in the field have extensive eight-pointed diffraction spikes that are characteristic of the Webb Telescope.$

Age is just a number for dwarf irregular galaxy I Zwicky 18!

Lying 60 million light-years away from Earth, astronomers originally believed this galaxy was young because of its rapid star formation. However, Hubble revealed this galaxy is pretty mature: https://bit.ly/45ouctv

A bright white and blue oval-shaped area takes up most of the view and is largely centered. Cloud-like wisps of blue material surround the bright-white center, forming a fluffy wreath-like shape. The fluffy material begins as light blue near the center and gradually darkens moving outward. Stars, seen as many bright white and yellow small points of light, are densely grouped in the white and light blue region, forming two roughly circular clumps, one in the upper left and one in the lower right. The corners of the image are dark and mostly empty, with a few larger, fuzzy yellow points of light scattered infrequently throughout.

In the middle, stretching from left to right, is a collection of dozens of yellowish spiral and elliptical galaxies that form a foreground galaxy cluster. They form a rough, flat line along the center. Among them are distorted linear features, which mostly appear to follow invisible concentric circles curving around the center of the image. The linear features are created when the light of a background galaxy is bent and magnified through gravitational lensing. At center left, a particularly prominent example stretches vertically about three times the length of a nearby galaxy. A variety of brightly colored, red and blue galaxies of various shapes are scattered across the image, making it feel densely populated. Near the center are two tiny galaxies compared to the galaxy cluster: a very red edge-on spiral and a very blue face-on spiral, which provide a striking color contrast.
